Egypt Advances Railway Projects with Alstom’s Support in Push for Local Industry Growth

On Sunday April 6, President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi met with Henri Poupart-Lafarge, the Chairman and CEO of French multinational Alstom, to discuss ongoing transportation projects and the localization of railway manufacturing in Egypt. The meeting, which was also attended by Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly and Transport Minister Kamel El-Wazir, focused on several significant initiatives, including the development of Alstom’s industrial complex in Borg El Arab City.

The new complex, which consists of two factories, will play a pivotal role in supporting Egypt’s growing transportation sector. The first factory will focus on producing electrical systems and railway components, while the second will manufacture mobile units tailored to meet domestic demand and support exports to the Middle East and Africa. These efforts align with Egypt’s broader goal of boosting its local industrial capabilities and reducing reliance on imports.

During the meeting, President El-Sisi underscored the urgency of completing these projects on time, as they form a key part of Egypt’s strategic vision to enhance its transportation infrastructure and stimulate industrial growth. The discussions also covered the progress of the Sixth Line of the Cairo Metro and the ongoing negotiations for the management and operation of the monorail system, further highlighting Egypt’s commitment to modernising its transport network.
