Nigeria’s women’s national football team, the Super Falcons, arrived in Abuja on Monday, July 28, to a hero’s welcome following their historic 3-2 comeback victory over Morocco in the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) final.
Greeted at the airport by traditional drummers, dancers, and jubilant supporters, the ten-time African Champions proceeded to the Presidential villa for an audience with President Bola Tinubu. In recognition of their triumph, Tinubu announced each player would receive a $100,000 cash bonus and a three-bedroom apartment, praising the team’s resilience and unrelenting spirit.
The victory in Rabat underscored the Super Falcons’ dominance in African women’s football, despite longstanding grievances over delayed payments and unequal treatment compared to the men’s team. The championship win, achieved after overturning a 2-0 deficit, has reignited calls for equal pay and better support for the women’s squad. Football stakeholders, including Benue State Football Association Chairman Paul Edeh, lauded the team’s achievements, highlighting that their consistency and success outshine that of the men’s national team, the Super Eagles.
