The UN Security Council backed Morocco’s claim over Western Sahara in a resolution supported by the US, marking a significant shift in international stance.
The United Nations Security Council adopted a resolution on Friday stating that genuine autonomy for Western Sahara under Moroccan sovereignty could be the most feasible solution to Rabat’s 50-year conflict with the Algeria-backed Polisario Front.
Eleven Member States voted in favor of the vote, including the United Kingdom, France, and the United States, and none voted against. Russia, China and Pakistan abstained, while Algeria did not vote.
Despite recent signals of positive developments and encouraging momentum in Moscow-Rabat relations, it was very likely that Russia, given its history with the US and its decades-long alliance with Algeria, would uphold its traditional stance.
