Nigeria’s President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, is scheduled to undertake a State visit to the United Kingdom on 18 and 19 March, marking the first such visit by a Nigerian leader in almost four decades, Buckingham Palace has confirmed.
President Tinubu will be accompanied by First Lady Oluremi Tinubu and will be hosted by King Charles III and Queen Camilla at Windsor Castle. Further details of the visit are expected to be released in due course.
The visit carries strong historical resonance. King Charles III, before ascending the throne, visited Nigeria on four occasions between 1990 and 2018 and previously received President Tinubu at Buckingham Palace in September 2024.
Nigeria, a member of the Commonwealth, last hosted a state visit by a sitting Nigerian leader to the UK in 1989, with earlier visits recorded in 1973 and 1981.
State visits typically feature a formal royal reception, a ceremonial carriage procession and a state banquet, underscoring their diplomatic significance. In 2024, King Charles hosted similar visits from several global leaders, including the presidents of the United States, France and Germany, positioning
the Tinubu visit within a broader strategy of high-level international engagement by the British monarchy.
