Cyclone Gezani Death Toll Climbs to 59 as Madagascar Expands Relief Operations

Madagascar was still grappling with the aftermath of Cyclone Gezani on Monday, as the national disaster management Agency confirmed that the death toll had risen to 59, with 15 people reported missing.

The number of injured has reached 804, while 423,986 homes have been damaged. At least 1,428 people have been displaced.

Updated figures covering five regions and 25 affected districts indicate that 27,756 houses were flooded, 49,129 buildings sustained varying degrees of damage, and 25,044 homes were completely destroyed.

The hardest-hit regions include East, Analamanga, Analanjirofo, Alaotra Mangoro and Itasy. Of the total fatalities, 41 were recorded in Toamasina city, eight in Brickaville, three in Ambatondrazaka, and two each in Mahanoro and Toamasina II. Anjorozobe, Ankazobe and Manjakandriana each reported one death.

Relief operations are ongoing across all affected areas, with authorities distributing food and medical supplies after the government declared the cyclone a national disaster.
