Leaders of the East African Community (EAC) have called for an immediate ceasefire in the conflict-hit eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).
The appeal was made on March 7 during the 25th Ordinary Summit of EAC Heads of State held in Arusha, Tanzania, where leaders reviewed progress on the Nairobi Peace Process aimed at restoring peace in the region.
In a communique issued after the meeting, the leaders welcomed steps taken so far and commended Kenyan President William Ruto for coordinating regional efforts. However, they expressed concern about continued hostilities and urged all parties to halt fighting and pursue peaceful dialogue.
The summit also appealed to the African Union to provide financial and logistical support for mediation efforts, while backing parallel diplomatic initiatives under the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region, led by Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni.
Beyond the security concerns, the bloc reaffirmed its commitment to advancing regional integration, particularly in trade, infrastructure development, and the free movement of people and goods.
