Mozambique Suspends RFI Frequency Over Air Traffic Interference Concerns

Mozambique’s National Communications Institute (INCM) has announced the temporary suspension of a broadcasting frequency used by Radio France Internationale (RFI), citing concerns over interference with critical aeronautical communications.

In a statement issued on Sunday, 22 March 2026, the regulator explained that the action followed an incident recorded on Friday, 20 March 2026, in Maputo. The disruption involved interference on frequency 118.1 MHz, which is used for essential air traffic control communications.

According to INCM, the issue was first flagged by Aeroportos de Moçambique, prompting an immediate technical investigation. The regulator’s teams traced the potential source of the interference to a broadcasting station operating on 105 MHz, linked to RFI.

As a precautionary measure, the frequency was temporarily shut down in line with national radiocommunications regulations. Authorities confirmed that the interference ceased following the intervention, allowing aeronautical communication systems to return to normal operation.

INCM noted that investigations remain ongoing to establish the exact cause of the disruption and to implement long-term corrective measures. The regulator reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding the integrity of the radio spectrum while advancing a secure and efficient communications sector in support of Mozambique’s digital transformation agenda.
