Ghana, EU Seal Security Pact to Boost Counter-Terrorism Efforts

Ghana has formalised a security and defence partnership agreement with the European Union (EU) to strengthen its capacity to address terrorism and rising insecurity within the sub-region.

The agreement, signed on March 24 by Vice-President Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang and EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas, establishes a framework for cooperation in counter-terrorism, conflict prevention, cybersecurity, border management, maritime security in the Gulf of Guinea, and peace operations.

As part of the partnership, the EU will provide military equipment, including drones, vehicles and motorcycles, to support Ghana’s security operations.

Opoku-Agyemang noted that Ghana is already implementing at least 30 EU-backed security initiatives spanning conflict resolution, counter-terrorism and cybersecurity. Kallas added that the EU has delivered approximately 57.9 million U.S. dollars in security assistance to Ghana since 2023, covering both equipment and training support.
