ECOWAS Deploys Long-Term Observer Mission Ahead of Benin Presidential Election

The Economic Community of West African States has authorized the deployment of a long-term election observation mission to Benin ahead of its presidential election scheduled for April 12, 2026, according to a statement issued on March 26, 2026.

The regional bloc indicated that 15 observers drawn from member states will be stationed in Benin from March 22 to April 18, tasked with monitoring all critical phases of the electoral process. Their findings are expected to support early warning systems and facilitate timely responses to any emerging electoral tensions.

As part of broader preparations, ECOWAS will also establish a situation room to track developments nationwide and provide daily updates, ensuring coordinated oversight. This will complement a short-term observer mission comprising approximately 100 personnel to be deployed closer to polling day.

An estimated 7.9 million voters are expected to participate in the election, which will determine the successor to outgoing President Patrice Talon, whose term is set to conclude on May 23, 2026.
