Ethiopia registers over 36.9 million voters ahead of June 1 general election

Ethiopia’s National Election Board (NEBE) has registered more than 36.9 million voters for the country’s 7th general election slated for June 1. Of the total, 20.12 million are men and 16.84 million are women, with nearly 150,000 persons with disabilities also captured.

The voter registration exercise, initially expected to end in early April, has been extended to April 22 to accommodate ongoing preparations. NEBE Chairperson Melatwork Hailu indicated that the use of both digital and manual systems has enhanced inclusivity and participation.

Registration has been conducted across 46,750 polling stations nationwide, with election materials largely distributed. Earlier in the year, the electoral body launched its first digital platform, incorporating mobile and web-based applications, as part of efforts to modernize Ethiopia’s electoral process.
