South Africa and Botswana are set to deepen bilateral cooperation during the 6th Session of the Bi-National Commission (BNC) scheduled to take place in Gaborone on May 21, 2026.
The high-level meeting will be preceded by officials’ engagements from May 17 to 19, followed by a ministerial session on May 20, as both countries seek to review progress on joint commitments and expand cooperation across key sectors.
The BNC, established through an agreement signed in 2012 and inaugurated in 2013, serves as a platform for dialogue on bilateral, regional and continental matters between the neighbouring nations.
The upcoming session is expected to focus on strengthening political and economic relations, reviewing existing agreements and identifying new areas of collaboration. Key discussions will centre on regional security within the Southern African Development Community, implementation of the African Union Agenda 2063, and advancing the African Continental Free Trade Area.
South Africa and Botswana currently share 38 agreements and memoranda of understanding covering sectors including trade, agriculture, infrastructure, health, education, tourism and security.
Economic ties between the two countries remain strong, with South Africa continuing to rank among Botswana’s major trading partners. Botswana imports fuel, machinery, food and other essential goods from South Africa, while South African exports to Botswana reached R3.67 billion in January 2026.
Officials say the BNC will also provide an opportunity to strengthen regional integration efforts and promote inclusive economic growth through enhanced continental trade cooperation.
