South Africa’s Acting Police Minister Firoz Cachalia has urged citizens to exercise restraint and observe the law during planned nationwide demonstrations against illegal immigration scheduled for the end of the month.
Speaking at a media briefing on Monday, June 22, Cachalia reaffirmed that the Constitution guarantees the right to peaceful protest, but warned that violence, intimidation, destruction of property and any attempt to undermine public safety would be met with firm enforcement action.
He stressed that the South African Police Service (SAPS) remains fully prepared to maintain public order, with enhanced operational readiness across all provinces. He added that daily assessments and monitoring systems have been activated to ensure rapid response to emerging security risks.
Cachalia noted that, where necessary, SAPS may request support from the South African National Defence Force to reinforce policing capacity and protect critical infrastructure.
The minister further highlighted coordination within the Justice, Crime Prevention and Security (JCPS) Cluster, stating that preparedness measures are in place to ensure national stability. Engagements with provincial premiers are also underway to strengthen a coordinated government response.
He also referenced consultations with traditional leadership structures, including the Zulu Royal House, as part of broader efforts to promote peace, tolerance and non-violence. Government, he said, recognizes public concerns but insists that all expressions of grievance must remain lawful and peaceful.
