Mozambican President Daniel Francisco Chapo has announced plans to connect all provincial capitals, special economic zones (SEZs) and densely populated areas to the country’s 5G network by 2027.
Speaking at the opening of the fifth National Communications Conference in Maputo on Monday, June 22, Chapo said the initiative would be supported through the allocation of radio spectrum to attract investment and strengthen Mozambique’s digital infrastructure.
He noted that digital transformation is intended to improve public services, enhance institutional efficiency, create opportunities for young people and boost the country’s socio-economic development. According to the president, the expansion of digital technologies will also support data-driven decision-making, improve government accountability and help the country better respond to climate-related challenges.
Chapo emphasized the need for Mozambique to become more competitive and move beyond being solely a consumer of digital technologies.
The conference also witnessed the signing of a memorandum of understanding between Mozambique and Angola for the installation of a submarine cable linking Nacala in northern Mozambique to Lobito in Angola.
