Russia offers Mozambique support to tackle northern terrorism

Russia has pledged to support Mozambique’s efforts to eliminate the terrorist threat in the country’s north, following talks between Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and Mozambican President Daniel Francisco Chapo in Maputo on Thursday.

According to the Russian Foreign Ministry, the meeting focused on strengthening bilateral cooperation, particularly in trade, economic development and security. Lavrov said both countries would review Mozambique’s economic reform and modernization plans ahead of the next meeting of the Russian-Mozambican Intergovernmental Commission on Trade and Economic Cooperation.

He also reaffirmed Russia’s readiness to assist Mozambique in combating terrorism in the country’s northern region, while noting that the two nations continue to coordinate closely at the United Nations and other multilateral forums. Lavrov arrived in Mozambique on Thursday after visits to Ethiopia and Niger as part of his African tour.
