Togo Begins Nationwide Distribution of Millions of Insecticide-Treated Mosquito Nets to Fight Malaria

Togo has launched its sixth national campaign to distribute free insecticide-treated mosquito nets as part of efforts to reduce malaria infections and deaths across the country.

The first phase of the campaign began on 14 July 2026 in the Maritime, Plateaux, Central and Savanna Regions, with the second phase scheduled to cover Grand-Lomé and the Kara region from 26 to 30 July.

National Malaria Control Programme Coordinator Dr Atekpé urged households to collect their mosquito nets from designated distribution points using their registration coupons. Health officials will also provide guidance on proper installation, washing and maintenance to ensure maximum protection.

A total of 5,658,350 mosquito nets will be distributed nationwide to protect an estimated 8.8 million people. Authorities said the latest-generation nets contain insecticide products against which no mosquito resistance has been recorded.

Despite ongoing interventions, malaria remains a major public health challenge in Togo. In 2025, the country recorded more than 2.2 million confirmed cases and 939 deaths, with children under five accounting for nearly 70 per cent of fatalities. The government says the campaign is aimed at reducing transmission and moving towards eliminating malaria-related deaths.
