Ramaphosa Puts Infrastructure at Heart of South Africa’s Economic Growth

President Cyril Ramaphosa has reaffirmed South Africa’s commitment to infrastructure investment as a key driver of economic growth, job creation and regional integration.

Addressing the Sustainable Infrastructure Development Symposium South Africa (SIDSSA) 2026, he said the country needed reliable energy, adequate water, efficient transport systems, digital connectivity and functional municipalities to support businesses and improve citizens’ lives.

Ramaphosa said the estimated value of South Africa’s Strategic Integrated Projects had risen from about R340 billion in 2020 to more than R1.67 trillion. The current portfolio comprises 195 public- and private-sector projects across priority industries.

According to him, 32 projects valued at approximately R48 billion have been completed over the past several years, while 55 projects worth more than R407 billion are under construction. He said Infrastructure South Africa’s R600 million project-preparation facility was supporting 26 projects, with increasing attention being given to municipal infrastructure.

More than 1,000 guests, including delegates from neighbouring countries, attended SIDSSA 2026, which ended on Tuesday, 25 August.
