Nigerian opposition presidential candidate Peter Obi said his convoy was blocked on Tuesday while he attempted to visit Yelwata village in Benue State, where more than 150 people were killed in 2025. Police confirmed that a group of youths obstructed the convoy and said an investigation had been launched.
Obi said the group chanted at him to turn back, describing the incident as distressing. He explained that the visit was intended to support and comfort families who lost relatives in the violence. His office alleged that those who blocked the convoy were armed with dangerous weapons.
Nigeria is scheduled to hold elections on January 16, with Obi among the opposition candidates challenging President Bola Tinubu.
