Kenya’s Linda Mwananchi opposition coalition mobilised tens of thousands of supporters in Nairobi on Sunday, September 13, 2026, for its first rally in the capital as political activity intensifies ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Supporters gathered in Nairobi’s Gikomba district, where opposition figures James Orengo, Babu Owino and Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna led a procession through the streets amid chants and calls for political change.
A significant police presence was deployed along the procession route, but the event remained peaceful. This contrasted with the coalition’s previous rally in Homa Bay in August 2026, which was disrupted by violence involving rioters and police and left four people dead.
Sifuna, a dissident from the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), emerged as a prominent figure among supporters at the Nairobi gathering, particularly younger participants who called for a new generation of political leadership.
Addressing the crowd, Sifuna targeted President William Ruto, predicting that he would become Kenya’s first president to serve only one term. The message has gained traction through the slogan “Wantam”, derived from “one term” and popularised in Sheng, Nairobi’s urban slang.
The rally comes about a year before Kenya’s 2027 general elections, with the opposition seeking to consolidate its support and mount a challenge to Ruto’s bid for another term.
