African Union Commission Chairperson Mahamoud Ali Youssouf is expected to visit Sudan soon for talks on lifting the country’s suspension from the bloc, Foreign Minister Mohieddin Salim said this Wednesday, 7 October 2026.
Speaking in a televised interview with state news agency SUNA, Salim said the anticipated visit would focus on Sudan’s reinstatement. He did not announce a date.
The AU suspended Sudan following the October 2021 military coup led by Abdel Fattah al-Burhan. Salim criticised provisions governing the AU Peace and Security Council and said he had urged the council in February to reverse the suspension.
The minister also called on the United States to reassess its policy towards Sudan and criticised the diplomatic Quint — comprising the UN, AU, EU, IGAD and Arab League — for excluding the government from meetings. The Quint has been facilitating consultations among Sudanese political groups and armed factions ahead of a broader political transition. Salim said Sudan remained open to peace efforts, provided solutions were determined by Sudanese people. He reiterated the government’s conditions for ending the war, including disarming the Rapid Support Forces, assembling their troops in designated areas and expelling foreign mercenaries.
