Germany: Morocco’s DGSN-DGST chief visited the venues where the ongoing EURO 2024 matches are taking place

Morocco and Germany have renewed their determination to continue boosting bilateral ties and cooperation, particularly in security.

The two countries reaffirmed their willingness to cooperate more in security during an official visit by Morocco’s General Director of National Security and Territorial Surveillance (DGSN-DGST) Abdellatif Hammouchi from June 24-26 to Germany.

During the visit, which took place at the request of Germany, Hammouchi met with officials from the German federal police as well as the federal criminal police office to discuss means to strengthen bilateral security cooperation.

Hammouchi held working sessions, particularly with president of the federal police Dieter Romann as well as the president of the criminal police office, Holger Munch.

The discussions focused on ways to improve cooperation, especially in the fight against terrorism and cross-border crime.

The officials also reviewed the results of cooperation between the two countries.

Hammouchi’s delegation discussed opportunities for cooperation in the field of sports security and mechanisms for exchanging expertise and technical assistance.

A statement from DGSN stressed that Hammouchi was briefed on the security arrangements and protection standards adopted by German police to secure the ongoing EURO 2024 competition.

Hammouchi then paid a field visit to the facilities and equipment of the Olympic Stadium in Berlin that is currently hosting matches for the competition,

DGSN statement noted that the visit aimed at learning about the German experience in organizing major sporting and security events.

This comes as Morocco is preparing to host global and continental sporting and security events, including Interpol’s 93rd General Assembly session that will take place in Marrakech in 2025.

Morocco will also host the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations and the 2030 World Cup.

The DGSN statement further stressed that the visit was meant to showcase the importance of bilateral cooperation between the two countries.

Morocco has in recent years established itself as a commendable host of global events, ranging from major sporting competitions and high-level political dialogues to significant security gatherings.

The experience has earned Morocco respect for its organizational capabilities.

Many countries are now relying on the North African kingdom to contribute to the security of various international events, including its involvement in ensuring security during the World Cup in Qatar in 2022.

Most recently, France sought out Morocco’s expertise for the upcoming Paris 2024 Olympics.
