Ugandan police shoot opponent Bobi Wine

Ugandan opposition leader Bobi Wine was shot in the leg by police on Tuesday September 3 in Bulindo, a town located about 20 kilometers (12 miles) north of the capital, Kampala. The news was shared via his official X account.

The message stated: “Our President Bobi Wine was shot in the leg by the police in Bulindo! He has been rushed to the hospital for urgent medical attention. We will keep the country updated on his condition.” The details of the incident in Bulindo were not elaborated upon.

According to Uganda’s police force on X, Wine and his team had organized a procession to Bulindo, but the police had advised against it. Videos circulating on social media show Bobi Wine, conscious but with a bloody wound on his left shin, being carried by supporters.

Bobi Wine, whose real name is Robert Kyagulanyi, is a prominent opposition figure and former singer who has been a leading critic of President Yoweri Museveni’s long-standing regime. At 42 years old, he leads the National Unity Platform (NUP) and was the main rival to Museveni in the 2021 presidential election.

President Museveni, 79, was re-elected for a sixth term with 58% of the vote, according to official results, while Bobi Wine received 35%. Wine condemned the election as a “farce.”

In recent years, Bobi Wine has faced multiple arrests and periods of house arrest, and his supporters’ rallies have frequently been met with force. His 2021 presidential campaign was the subject of the documentary “Bobi Wine: The People’s President,” which was nominated for an Oscar in February.
