The unemployment rate in Angola in the second quarter of this year was 32.3%, an improvement of 0.2 percentage points on the same period last year, the National Statistics Institute announced on September 11, in the second edition of the Angolan Employment Survey.
The unemployment rate is higher for women (34.2%) compared to men (30.2%), reads the report available on the Angolan INE website, which details that the unemployed population was estimated at 5,764,313 people, of which 2,617,381 were men and 3,146,932 women.
In the Angolan Employment Survey, the institute also states that the economically active population, i.e. over 15 years old and working or available for a job, in the second quarter of this year was 17.8 million people, with an activity rate of 91%, which shows an increase of 2.6% over the previous quarter.
The employed population aged 15 and over was estimated at 12,108,854, of which 6,047,617 were men and 6,061,237 women.
The employment rate, estimated at 61.6%, “in rural areas is higher than in urban areas”, says INE, pointing out that “the employment rate for men (63.9%) is higher than for women (59.5%)” and that the youth unemployment rate was 37.8%.
The survey also reveals that 44.8% of the people who declared they were employed worked in the areas of “agriculture, animal production, hunting, forestry and fishing, followed by wholesale and retail trade, with 22.4%”.
