Ghana: Outgoing and elected Presidents meet to ensure smooth transition

In Ghana, the transition of power is in motion just two days after the Electoral Commission declared the results of the presidential election. Outgoing President Nana Akufo-Addo and President-elect John Mahama met in the Ghanaian capital on Wednesday, December 11, for their first official interaction since the announcement.

The meeting between the two leaders lasted approximately 30 minutes. During their discussion, President Akufo-Addo warmly congratulated his successor, describing Mahama’s victory as “remarkable.” This gesture followed a phone call on Monday, during which Akufo-Addo proposed the swift establishment of a transition team to ensure a seamless handover. “It is essential for Ghana to remain a functioning democratic state that respects the will of its people,” Akufo-Addo emphasized.

Speaking briefly to the press after the meeting, President-elect Mahama expressed his satisfaction with the process so far. He confirmed being updated on key issues, including the nation’s security and economic landscape, and pledged collaboration for the country’s benefit. “We will work together in the interest of Ghana,” he assured.

Both leaders described their initial meeting as cordial. The transition team, comprising around 30 members, is co-chaired by the chiefs of staff from both camps. Representing the outgoing government are officials overseeing critical portfolios such as Defense, Finance, Interior, Justice, and Foreign Affairs. On Mahama’s side, the team includes close advisors and senior members of his party.

With John Mahama’s inauguration scheduled for January 7, the transition period is expected to be brief but efficient.
