Egyptian Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly and UN Secretary-General António Guterres have both extended their support to Lebanon’s newly appointed Prime Minister, Nawaf Salam, as the country enters a period of renewed optimism for its future.
During a phone conversation on Sunday January 19, Madbouly congratulated Salam on securing a confidence vote in Parliament and forming a new Government. He affirmed Egypt’s full backing for Lebanon’s stability and pledged support for the new Government’s efforts in striving for security, prosperity, and lasting stability.
Salam expressed his gratitude to Madbouly, recognising Lebanon’s deep appreciation for Egypt’s “positive role, status, and influence in the region”. He reiterated his government’s commitment to strengthening bilateral cooperation with Egypt in various sectors.
UN Secretary-General Guterres, who had concluded a two-day visit to Lebanon on Saturday, echoed the message of hope. In his remarks, he urged the new government, the Lebanese people, and the international community to seize this moment of opportunity. Guterres noted that a “window has opened” for Lebanon to embark on a new era of institutional stability, where a fully functioning state could protect its citizens and allow the country’s potential to thrive. He met with both newly elected President Joseph Aoun and Prime Minister-designate Salam, and observed a positive, albeit cautious, outlook despite the considerable challenges that lie ahead.
