Addis Ababa Introduces 100 Electric Buses to Boost Sustainable Transport

The city of Addis Ababa has launched a fleet of 100 electric buses, marking a significant step towards promoting sustainable and eco-friendly transportation in Ethiopia. The buses, which were assembled locally by Belayneh Kindie Metal Engineering Complex with components sourced from China, are equipped with advanced technologies. Such as an integrated Intelligent Transportation System and Fare Collection System, as reported by the Ethiopian Broadcasting Corporation on Tuesday April 1.
These electric buses are already operational along the newly established Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) routes, offering Addis Ababa residents a modern and efficient mode of public transport. Ethiopian Minister of Transport and Logistics Alemu Sime highlighted the environmental benefits of the buses, noting that they produce zero emissions, providing a cleaner alternative to traditional fuel-powered vehicles. The buses are also designed to improve commuting efficiency by using dedicated bus lanes, ensuring quicker travel times for passengers.
The Ethiopian government is keen to accelerate the transition to electric mobility. Currently, there are over 100,000 electric vehicles on the road, with plans to increase this number to 500,000 within the next decade. The government’s strategy includes replacing 95% of fuel-powered vehicles with electric alternatives, supported by measures such as the ban on importing gasoline and diesel vehicles, implemented last year to curb the impact of rising global fuel prices.
