Ghana, Czech Republic Chart New Course for Strategic Partnership in Trade, Security, and Innovation

Ghana and the Czech Republic have reaffirmed on April 9 their commitment to strengthening bilateral ties through enhanced political, economic and cultural cooperation during the historic state visit Czech President Petr Pavel is paying to Accra April 8 to 11.

Hosted by President John Mahama at Jubilee House, the discussions focused on boosting trade, investing in infrastructure, and deepening collaboration in health care, climate resilience, and security. A Memorandum of Understanding on political consultations and an air services agreement were signed, with both leaders hailing the agreements as key tools to increase trade volumes — currently at $33 million, the second-highest in a decade for Czech engagement in the region.

President Mahama highlighted the long-standing relationship between the two countries, which dates back to 1961, and underscored the importance of private sector collaboration, particularly within the framework of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). He praised Czech support in Ghana’s health sector, notably through the Vamed Health Projects, and urged for renewed attention to the stalled 50 Bridges initiative, with a proposal to expand it to 100 bridges.

On regional stability, Mahama briefed President Pavel on West Africa’s security challenges and requested Czech support in ongoing counter-terrorism efforts led by ECOWAS and the EU.

Climate action, vocational training, and multilateral diplomacy also featured prominently in the talks. Ghana pledged support for the Czech Republic’s UN Security Council candidacy, while seeking backing for Ambassador Mohamed Adam’s bid for UN Tourism Organization.

President Pavel, the first Czech leader to visit Ghana in over 60 years, announced the launch of a Czech Technology Hub to spur innovation and investment, and expressed keen interest in expanding ties in agriculture, mining, and water purification. As global geopolitical tensions mount, he emphasized the importance of building resilient, diversified partnerships based on mutual benefit.
