Namibia is aiming for an accelerated shift from its recent oil and gas discoveries to full-scale production, President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah stated on Wednesday, April 23, as the nation seeks to establish itself as a leading energy hub in southern Africa.
Speaking through Prime Minister Elijah Ngurare at the opening of the Namibia International Energy Conference in Windhoek, the President outlined a strategic vision in which the energy sector will play a central role in national development and economic diversification.
With significant discoveries made in the offshore Orange Basin and the recent launch of green industrial projects such as the HyIron Oshivela zero-emission iron facility, Namibia is now focused on value addition, employment creation, and inclusive economic growth. Emphasis was placed on the importance of local content, skills development, and technology transfer, with investors urged to align their efforts with the country’s long-term development objectives. The forthcoming phase of energy development, it was noted, would be essential in generating revenues needed to enhance infrastructure and public services.
The president also reaffirmed Namibia’s commitment to ethical governance and transparency, declaring that corruption would not be tolerated in the country’s energy journey. Institutional reforms and streamlined regulations are being prioritised to foster a conducive investment environment. As part of its broader energy strategy, Namibia is positioning itself not only as a regional energy player but also as a logistics and export hub with potential in critical minerals, solar, wind, and other renewable resources.
