UNESCO Launches 2025 Africa Week Themed Global Solidarity for Restitution & Restoration of African Heritage

UNESCO on Monday launched Africa Week 2025 highlighting the importance of engagement under the theme “Global Solidarity for the Restitution and Restoration of African Heritage through Culture, Education and Sciences”.

UNESCO Deputy Director-General Xing Qu, and Executive Council President Vera El Khoury Lacoeuilhe reiterated the organization’s commitment to safeguarding African heritage and combating illicit trafficking, in line with the 1970 Convention.

The opening panel, chaired by Morocco’s Permanent Delegate to UNESCO and vice-president of UNESCO’s Africa Group, introduced key themes: global solidarity; the role of education; and scientific diplomacy in reclaiming and restoring African heritage.

“These themes reflect a shared aspiration for historical justice, mutual respect, and strengthened cooperation,” said the Moroccan diplomat. He also emphasized a comprehensive approach to restitution, beyond the return of objects, and highlighted the importance of education, research, and cultural diplomacy in rebuilding memory and reinforcing dignity.
