The South African government has dismissed comments made by US President Donald Trump on his Truth Social platform, calling them “regrettable” and “not substantiated by fact.”
In a statement released over the week-end, the Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO) reaffirmed that the portrayal of Afrikaners as an exclusively white and persecuted community was historically inaccurate.
The ministry said the Government’s stance on the matter remained consistent, citing earlier official statements addressing misrepresentations of race relations and farm-related crimes in South Africa.
DIRCO referenced four previous statements responding to similar claims, including reactions to US programmes and diplomatic communications, all of which clarified the realities of South Africa’s human rights record.
Trump’s post, which alleged that Afrikaners were being persecuted, has faced widespread criticism for distorting the country’s social context. The South African government stressed its ongoing commitment to national unity, social cohesion, and global cooperation, describing the nation’s democratic transformation as a model of reconciliation. It added that South Africa was focused on contributing positively to the global stage and looked forward to hosting a successful G20 Leaders’ Summit.
