The ECOWAS Community Court of Justice has declined a request by former Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo to pause the work of the fact-finding Committee examining the petition for her removal from office.
Justice Torkornoo had sought provisional measures to shield her rights and avert what she described as potential irreparable harm while the main case was being considered.
In its ruling on Wednesday, the court held that the application was filed too late, noting that it came more than eight weeks after her suspension and over six weeks after the committee had begun its sittings. This delay, the judges said, undermined the urgency and extraordinary circumstances needed to justify a temporary halt to the proceedings. The Attorney-General has been granted 30 days to respond to the substantive case.
