South Africa: Putin, Ramaphosa Discuss Prospects for Political Settlement in Ukraine

Russian President Vladimir Putin has discussed the prospect of a political settlement in Ukraine during a telephone conversation with South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, the Kremlin said on Tuesday.

In a statement, the Kremlin said the conflict in Ukraine was raised during the call, with Ramaphosa expressing support for Russia’s diplomatic efforts aimed at resolving the war. “The situation in Ukraine was touched upon. Cyril Ramaphosa expressed support for Russia’ efforts aimed at a political and diplomatic resolution of the conflict,” the statement said.

Both leaders also underscored the importance of continued coordination between Moscow and Pretoria, particularly within multilateral platforms such as the G20 and the BRICS bloc. They further discussed ways of deepening bilateral economic cooperation. South Africa has previously positioned itself as a potential mediator in the Russia-Ukraine conflict, which is approaching its fifth year.
