Consumer protection teams from the Ministry of Commerce and Tourism carried out a sweeping inspection and regulatory operation across markets and retail outlets in the three provinces of Nouakchott on Monday, February 23.
The exercise formed part of a broader strategy to stabilise prices, curb speculative practices and dismantle monopolistic tendencies within the distribution chain.
In a statement, the ministry indicated that the operation was aimed at ensuring traders comply with price ceilings previously agreed with the Federation of Commerce. Authorities also underscored their determination to clamp down on any unjustified increases in the cost of essential commodities.
The ministry further stated that officials would receive and investigate public complaints, summon offending traders and apply sanctions, including fines, in line with prevailing legislation.
It added that field inspections would continue in the coming days as part of sustained efforts to safeguard consumers and maintain stability in the marketplace.
