South Africa’s economy expanded by 1.1 per cent in 2025, according to data released on Tuesday, March 10, by Statistics South Africa (Stats SA).
The country’s gross domestic product (GDP) grew by 0.4 per cent in the fourth quarter of 2025, marking the fifth consecutive quarter of economic expansion, following a revised 0.3 per cent growth in the third quarter.
Stats SA said the annual growth was largely driven by sectors including finance, real estate and business services, as well as agriculture, forestry, trade, catering and accommodation.
The South African government welcomed the figures, describing the performance as the strongest annual growth since 2022, when the economy expanded by 2.1 per cent.
Acting government spokesperson Nomonde Mnukwa said reforms under Operation Vulindlela and collaboration between government and businesses had helped sustain the growth momentum.
The statistics agency also reported that expenditure on GDP rose by 1.4 per cent in 2025, compared with 0.4 per cent in 2024, although net exports reduced overall growth by 1.0 percentage point.
