Yesterday, April 21, Nigeria’s President, Bola Tinubu has dismissed Finance Minister Wale Edun and appointed tax specialist Taiwo Oyedele in a strategic move to reinforce support for ongoing economic reforms.
Oyedele, a former PricewaterhouseCoopers expert, recently assumed office as junior finance minister on March 16 and has played a key role in implementing the administration’s tax overhaul introduced at the start of the year.
A government statement did not provide reasons for Edun’s removal but directed that the transition be completed by April 23.
During his tenure, Edun spearheaded reforms aimed at improving fiscal transparency, including mandating that oil revenues be paid directly into the federation account, limiting deductions by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited.
The leadership change signals an intensification of policy recalibration as the administration navigates economic pressures and seeks to consolidate reform momentum.
