Cape Verde on Thursday officially commenced campaigning for its May 17 legislative elections, with political leaders and electoral authorities urging robust civic engagement and a peaceful, rules-based process.
President Jose Maria Neves called on citizens to critically assess party proposals and vote in line with their aspirations, cautioning that abstention undermines democratic strength. He emphasised that participation at the ballot box remains a vital instrument for safeguarding citizens’ interests, according to local media reports.
The National Election Commission (CNE) echoed this position, advocating for a campaign anchored in civility, mutual respect, and strict adherence to electoral regulations. The upcoming vote will determine the composition of the 72-seat National Assembly. The CNE confirmed that 48 candidate lists from five political parties have been approved to contest the الانتخابات.
Official data indicate that 419,755 voters are registered for the polls—representing a 6.82 per cent increase from the 2021 legislative elections, with the most notable growth recorded among diaspora voters.
