The death toll from the ongoing Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo has risen to 101, according to the country’s Health Ministry. Health authorities said the deaths have been recorded since the outbreak was declared on May 15, 2026, with the overall case fatality rate standing at 18.4 per cent.
Official data released on June 9 showed that the cumulative number of confirmed Ebola cases has reached 550, while the outbreak has spread to 25 health zones across the provinces of Ituri, North Kivu and South Kivu.
The ministry reported that seven patients recovered within the past 24 hours, bringing the total number of recoveries to 19. Ituri remains the epicentre of the outbreak, accounting for 17 of the 25 affected health zones. Health officials said the outbreak, caused by the Bundibugyo strain of the Ebola virus, continues to show an upward weekly trend. They noted that a recent slight decline reflected in epidemic data may be due to delays in laboratory reporting rather than a reduction in transmission.
Authorities said surveillance operations, patient care and community sensitisation campaigns are ongoing in affected areas as efforts continue to contain the spread of the disease.
