A total of 560 Ugandan nationals have been evacuated from South Africa following ongoing xenophobic violence and anti-migrant protests, after 255 more returnees arrived home on Sunday, July 5.
The Ugandan Embassy in South Africa said Sunday’s flight was the third batch of voluntary evacuations, following the return of 273 citizens on the first flight and 32 on a second flight that arrived on Friday, July 3.
Speaking after receiving the evacuees at Entebbe International Airport, military spokesperson Chris Magezi said Uganda offers ample opportunities for returnees to rebuild their lives. Some of those returning are also taking part in a government-led training programme aimed at helping them develop the skills and mindset needed for successful reintegration.
