Nigerian authorities have issued a flood alert for 14 States as the rainy season intensifies, warning of a medium flood risk from Wednesday, July 15, 2026, to Monday, July 20, 2026.
The Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA) identified Adamawa, Akwa Ibom, Anambra, Bauchi, Benue, Borno, Cross River, Edo, Enugu, Imo, Kaduna, Lagos, Niger and Plateau as States likely to be affected.
The Agency warned of possible flooding along major river channels and identified 16 monitoring stations as high-risk areas. It said communities, schools, health facilities and markets could be impacted if preventive measures are not taken. NIHSA urged residents in flood-prone areas to move to safer locations, clear drainage systems and avoid crossing flooded roads.
Nigeria experiences frequent flooding during its annual rainy season, with experts linking the increasing severity of floods to climate change, intense rainfall and inadequate drainage infrastructure.
