On Monday, September 21, 2026, a Rwandan man living in north London has become the first person charged in the United Kingdom with offences relating to the 1994 genocide in Rwanda.
Dr Vincent Brown, formerly known as Dr Vincent Bajinya, 65, faces one charge of conduct ancillary to genocide and six charges of conduct ancillary to murder as a crime against humanity.
The Crown Prosecution Service alleged that Brown directed and incited acts of murder and genocide committed by others. He is due to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, September 22, 2026.
The charges followed a seven-year investigation launched by the Metropolitan Police’s War Crimes Team in September 2019. The probe began after Rwanda formally requested investigations into people allegedly involved in atrocities in Kigali’s Rugenge district in April 1994. An estimated 800,000 ethnic Tutsis and moderate Hutus were killed by Hutu extremists during approximately 100 days of violence in 1994. The Metropolitan Police said other investigations into UK-based individuals suspected of involvement in similar offences remained ongoing.
