At least 16 people were killed and 34 others injured in clashes between two communities in South Sudan’s Warrap State on October 12–13, 2026.
Tonj East County Caretaker Commissioner Machuei Bith told Radio Tamazuj on Thursday, October 15, that the violence involved the Akok Deng Achuil and Thiik Majok Makom communities in Ngap Agok and Malual Chum payams. He said the clashes followed the killing of an Akok Deng Achuil community member by unidentified gunmen in Mader Boma several days earlier.
According to Bith, members of the community blamed their Thiik Majok Makom neighbours and attacked residential areas on Tuesday morning before authorities could investigate. Casualties were recorded on both sides.
Warrap State Civil Society Network chairperson Bona Malual appealed for calm and urged the government to bring those responsible to justice. The violence comes ahead of South Sudan’s elections, scheduled for December 2026, amid concerns about security and conditions for a peaceful vote.
