AfDB: Eight candidates to succeed Donald Kaberuka.

logo_printThe African Development Bank (AfDB) has announced on the 9th February that the steering committee of its Board of Governors has approved the final list of candidates for the election of the next president of the Bank.

On the list published by the bank, we note : Sufian Ahmed, Ethiopia, Dr. Cristina Duarte, Cape Verde, Dr Samura Kamara, Sierra Leone, Dr Akinwunmi Adeshina, Nigeria, Mr Jalloul Ayed, Tunisia, Dr Kordjé Bédoumra, Chad, and Mr Birama Boubacar Sidibe, Mali.

According to the rules of procedure, the election of the President of the AfDB will take place at the next annual meeting of the term of office of the outgoing President. Accordingly, the Governing Council will elect the successor of Dr. Kaberuka on the 28th May 2015, during the Bank’s Annual Meeting, scheduled to take place in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, from 25th to 29th May 2015.

Note that Dr Kaberuka, The current President, Dr. Donald Kaberuka, a national of Rwanda, was elected in July 2005, and commenced his first term on the 1st September 2005. Following his re-election in May 2010, he commenced his last 5-year term on 1st September 2010. Under his tenure the AfDB has collaborated and often competed with other multilaterals like the World Bank and International Monetary Fund, working hard to make itself relevant to and to be ahead in Africa’s economic, social and political development.

The Bank operates under the leadership of the President, who serves as the legal representative of the Bank, the Chairperson of the Board of Directors, and the Chief of Staff of the Bank.
