Guinea Junta makes interim Prime Minister’s appointment permanent; Mali Junta appoints Abdoulaye Maiga interim PM

Guinea’s ruling military junta has appointed interim Prime Minister Bernard Gomou to take up the post permanently, replacing Mohamed Beavogui, who has been absent since last month for health reasons.

The transitional authorities appointed Mr Gomou as interim Prime Minister on 17 July.

Mr Gomou was previously Minister of Trade and Industry in the transitional government. His appointment as Prime Minister was announced in a statement read out on national television.

The junta has faced deadly protests in recent weeks over its perceived intention to stay in power for the next three years. It is currently negotiating with its West African neighbors about a possible reduction in that time.

In Mali, Abdoulaye Maiga, currently government spokesman and minister of territorial administration, is the new acting prime minister, a government statement said.

The PM Choguel Maïga has been hospitalized in a Bamako clinic for eleven days now and put on “forced rest”, according to the Malian transitional authorities, “after fourteen months of unremitting work”. The head of government is said to have suffered a stroke or a heart attack.
