US has donated €6.6 million to 7,000 families in central Mozambique since 2021

Since 2021, the United States has contributed $7 million (approximately 6.6 million euros) to support over 7,000 families in Nhamatanda district, Sofala province, central Mozambique. The announcement was made on December 5.
The funding, channeled through the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and the international NGO GiveDirectly, has been directed towards providing unconditional cash assistance to vulnerable households.
“Since 2021, GiveDirectly and USAID have delivered over $7 million directly to more than 7,000 families in Nhamatanda, Mozambique. This financial aid enables families to eat more frequently, improve their diets, and navigate a climate crisis they did not cause,” stated GiveDirectly in a press release.
The U.S. Embassy in Mozambique further clarified that the initiative is part of a broader effort to reduce poverty in rural, disaster-prone farming communities.
“The targeted communities were selected based on their level of need, in collaboration with local authorities, civil society organizations, and private sector partners. This project is apolitical and nonpartisan,” emphasized the embassy.
This direct assistance program reflects a commitment to addressing the immediate needs of those most affected by climate change and other challenges, while fostering resilience in vulnerable rural communities.
