Gbagbo Reiterates Opposition to Ouattara’s Fourth Term Amid Rising Political Tensions

Former Ivorian President Laurent Gbagbo has reaffirmed his strong opposition to a potential fourth term bid by incumbent President Alassane Ouattara.
Addressing thousands of supporters at Ficgayo Square in Yopougon, Abidjan, this week-end, Gbagbo hailed the recent joint opposition march as “gigantic,” while condemning xenophobic remarks voiced during the demonstration. He urged his supporters to resist provocation without resorting to divisive ethnic or origin-based rhetoric. His declaration comes as the Ivorian prosecutor pursues legal action against individuals linked to the xenophobic statements.
Despite his exclusion from the electoral roll since 2020, Gbagbo’s supporters remain resolute, insisting that his candidacy cannot be overlooked in the October 2025 presidential race. Many, like activist Mrs. Komenan, pledged to put his name forward regardless of the legal restrictions, underscoring their unwavering loyalty. With the deadline for submitting nominations set for 26 August, Gbagbo’s defiant stance has intensified political debate and heightened anticipation in the run-up to a potentially volatile election season.
