South Africa has been re-elected to the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Governing Council, reaffirming its influential role in shaping global aviation policy.
The Department of Transport announced on Sunday, September 28, that the re-election took place on Saturday during ICAO’s 42nd General Assembly in Montreal, Canada.
South Africa secured its place in Part II of the Council, a category that grants higher representation in international civil aviation forums. ICAO, a UN specialised agency, is responsible for coordinating global air navigation standards and promoting the safe and orderly growth of international air transport.
Transport Minister Barbara Creecy welcomed the outcome, noting that it “reaffirms the mandate that South Africa has held since 2003” and reflects the confidence of ICAO member states in the country’s continued leadership.
She highlighted South Africa’s contributions to advancing ICAO’s agenda on safety, security, sustainability, and environmental matters while ensuring Africa’s priorities remain at the forefront. Creecy also acknowledged the support of the African Civil Aviation Commission in promoting the continent’s aviation interests globally. Egypt and Nigeria were also elected under Part II. The 42nd Assembly, themed “Safe Skies, Sustainable Future,” runs until October 3rd and gathers all 193 ICAO member states to set aviation policies and elect council members.
