Burundi’s President, Évariste Ndayishimiye, has been endorsed by the ruling CNDD-FDD as its candidate for the 2026 presidential election, the party announced on Sunday, April 26.
Ndayishimiye, 57, has been in office since 2020, when he succeeded former leader Pierre Nkurunziza following his death. The party confirmed he will contest for another seven-year term, although the election date is yet to be announced.
A former General and ex-party leader, Ndayishimiye held several senior positions under Nkurunziza before winning the May 2020 presidential election. He currently serves as chairperson of the African Union, a role he assumed in February 2026 for a one-year tenure.
