Fuel Depot Fire in Chad Injures Over 200 as Government Orders Relocation of Facilities

More than 200 people were injured after a major fire broke out at a large fuel depot in Abeche, the capital of Chad’s eastern Ouaddai province, on Tuesday night, May 12, 2026.

Authorities disclosed on Thursday, May 13, 2026, that 206 injured persons were receiving treatment at various health facilities, while 53 others remained under medical observation. Ouaddai provincial health delegate, Abdoulmahmoud Chine, said several victims were responding positively to treatment.

During a visit to the disaster scene and hospitals, Chadian Deputy Prime Minister Limane Mahamat and other government officials expressed support for the victims. Mahamat also directed local authorities to relocate all fuel depots within the city to areas outside Abeche within 10 days.
