Uganda’s Parliament has elected Jacob Oboth-Oboth as its new Speaker, succeeding Anita Among, who is under investigation over alleged corruption.
Mr Oboth-Oboth, a former Defence and Veterans Affairs Minister, secured a majority vote in Parliament on May 25, 2026. Following his election, he pledged to promote integrity and accountability within the legislature. “I pledge a corruption-free Parliament. Under my leadership, we will cultivate a culture of integrity and accountability,” he told lawmakers.
His predecessor, Ms Among, is reportedly confined to her residence in Kampala as authorities investigate corruption allegations. Security sources say her offices have been searched and several assets, including a personalised Rolls-Royce, have been confiscated as part of the probe.
In Uganda, the Speaker’s term runs concurrently with the five-year mandate of Parliament, unless interrupted.
