The Head of the Ethiopian Institute of Public Diplomacy (EIPD), Yassin Ahmed, says the high level of public participation in Ethiopia’s 7th General Election demonstrates that the country’s democratic progress is driven by a sovereign national will rooted in internal dialogue.
Speaking to the Ethiopian News Agency over the week-end, Ahmed said the strong turnout sends a clear message to the international community that Ethiopia’s political decisions are determined by its citizens and remain free from external influence.
He noted that the successful organization of the election, coupled with broad participation and oversight, reinforces Ethiopia’s position as the political headquarters of Africa and host of the African Union. According to him, the process also showcases Africa’s ability to manage democratic transitions effectively and independently.
Ahmed further expressed hope that future constitutional and legal reforms would allow Ethiopians living abroad with dual citizenship to participate in the country’s 8th General Election.
He also urged citizens, particularly first-time voters and young people, to reject political apathy and exercise their right to vote, stressing that their ballots remain a key tool for advancing Ethiopia’s democratic transformation and shaping its future.
