The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has warned that a severe funding shortfall is undermining its humanitarian response in Ethiopia, where conflict, climate shocks, disease outbreaks and economic challenges continue to drive humanitarian needs.
In its mid-year Ethiopia Humanitarian Situation Report, released late Monday, UNICEF said its 2026 Humanitarian Action for Children Appeal requires 401.5 million U.S. dollars, but only 88.7 million dollars—about 22% of the required funding—has been secured.
The Agency urged international donors to provide urgent support to ensure children, women and other vulnerable groups receive lifesaving assistance throughout 2026 and beyond.
UNICEF said insecurity, violence, climate-related pressures and public health emergencies have worsened food insecurity, displacement and disruptions to essential services across the country. It also highlighted the growing needs of Ethiopia’s refugee population, noting the country hosts more than 1.1 million refugees and asylum seekers, mainly from South Sudan, Somalia and Eritrea.
The agency further called for stronger collaboration among stakeholders to prepare for the expected impacts of El Niño, stressing that early action is crucial to reducing risks to vulnerable communities and protecting lives and livelihoods.
